Because Of Who You Are
If You should speak or should remain in silence
Should give me light or lead me through the dark
Whatever cost, whatever joy or sorrow
I’ll worship still because of who You are(Starfield, Sparrow/EMI, ©2006)
As I’ve heard this song “Great is the Lord” a couple of times over the past two weeks, I’ve been speechless every time I hear this part of the song. Seriously though, take a moment and really think about what you are reading when you look at these lyrics.
As Christians we are called to serve and honor the Lord in all we do. No matter what. I am reminded of Job and everything he faced in his life. He worshiped God clearly not because of his circumstances. When Job finds out about all he had lost, he “…fell on the ground and worshiped.” Job 1:20b (ESV)
Why would Job worship God in the midst of all that was happening? It’s not like he had lost his favorite sweatshirt, or his new pair of shoes. No, he lost his oxen and donkeys, his sheep and camels, his servants, his sons and daughters. Yet Job knew the Lord was in control; “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (1:21b) And that my dear friends, plays a key part in why Job was able to fall on his face and worship. Job did not second-guess what God was doing or whether or not God was in control. Job had a good understanding of who God is and was able to worship God because of that.
May we, as Christians, in this day and age strive to know more about God than “God is love.” Not only are we called search God and know God more, but it will serve greatly when we face trials; when he remains in silence or leads us through the dark, or through whatever cost, joy or sorrow. And in the times where he does speak or gives us light, how much more thankful would we be when we know who God is? For if we know who God is we would know that we don’t deserve the least of his grace that he daily bestows on us.
In that light, let’s start out by praising God for the fact that we are not under his wrath this very second!

This is absolutely true! I wish more people (of all ages) would stop blaming God for bad things happening. How do people know that it isn’t their own fault God is doing this to them?? And how do they know that God isn’t doing this to strengthen their faith in Him?? We have to “pick up our crosses daily and follow him” no matter what the circumstances. I love this post and I’m so glad that other people actually understand this difficult topic, as well.
