Where Does My Help Come From?

In this post I want to share with you all one of my favorite Psalms written by David.

Psalm 121 (ESV)
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

As I was pondering over the words of David I realized how often I’m deceived in thinking that my help can come from myself! A task is accomplished and I think “Well done!” Or I fail at a task and I think “Way to go! You messed it up again!” Either way, I’ll count myself responsible.

I love how the psalmist answers the question: “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” What do I have that comes even close to measuring up to the Lord of lords, who made heaven and earth? He is my keeper. Nothing is accomplished without His approval. No step do I take without Him guiding me. There are few other things I find such comfort in knowing.

I’ve been so thankful and humbled lately as God’s been guiding me through various obstacles. He’s given me a particular awareness of His love and His care for me, not allowing me to take credit for His doings. I tend to forget that He is not only a God of grace, but a God of love. He cares intimately for His children, “keeping” them; “He will keep your life” David writes.

My prayer is that God would encourage all of us as we turn our gaze to Him, seeking His strength. Would we be more and more aware of God’s work in our lives and flee the temptation to be our own help. He desires to be our strength. It’s no task for Him; it’s a joy and a delight to Him when we seek His help!

  1. Wow, thank you for posting this, Riëtte! This post was very encouraging and it also helped ease a few of the things I’ve been battling with lately. Good luck with your battles as well, for all humans face trials of a sinful nature. We must pray that God will show us what to do and that we can do anything through His strength!

  2. Riëtte,

    Good post. I trust that you’ll find the tremendous consolation in this psalm that God does watch over us at all times, that He never sleeps when we need to (thus proving that we’re not gods), and that He is delighted to show & prove His strength in the very midst of our weakness.
